Credible Waterfalls January 26, 2009

What’s to shoot when you’ve got a new video camera? A video for A Credible Threat, of course. I’ve been shooting waterfalls in slow motion since last August when I bought the Sanyo Xacti HD1010 cameral. It’s got a 300fps mode. At first I wanted to see what it looked like and needed a subject. Waterfalls are totally patient and cooperative. Many thanks to waterfalls from Palmdale, San Diego, Las Vegas, Huntingon Library, Palos Verdes and more.

Open Mic Nite from the audience January 22, 2009

Open mic at The Talking Stick in Santa Monica seemed like a good place to dust off the performing cobwebs. There’s always folks I know; the new location is bigger and sounds better; the stage hasn’t had me on it yet. But signup goes fast. I was there about 2 minutes past the 7pm signup and the list was full with a couple of teeny names squeezed at the bottom. Knowing full well I wouldn’t play, I wrote my name at the bottom as big as a house and prepared to enjoy the show without thinking about my own performance. The end of the story is next cause it’s not so interesting; at 9:45 I left (didn’t play – could’ve made it on the next name, no worries) with a great turkey sandwich to present to my understanding wife who was pampering herself in prep for her next day’s acting job.

The show itself was interesting musically to be sure, but more so on the human level. People really do like to perform. Special props the the 87 year old dude who plays electric autoharp. Heard him many times and love that he’s doing it. There’s a trio of teen girls (Ramakega – didn’t hear them this time cause they, too, hadn’t been called up yet) dutifully prepared to go onstage while their incredible patient dad hung in through it all.  CanyonEllen singing songs about tech. The twentysomething hipsters practicing right out the front door like it’s really important to do a great show. All in all the talent level is pretty danged good. Even the occasional stinker has some redeeming quality. For me, without the performance thoughts running through my head it was fun to watch the show as opposed to waiting my turn.

Folks want to communicate. Some are better at it than others, but that doesn’t really matter. Next Wednesday there will be another open mic with a room full of messages. btw if you want  to perform there, try to arrive before 7pm or the list is sure to be full.

Second Life March 25, 2008

Ha! I’ve made my avator for Second Life after reading about musicians playing gigs in the virtual space. It took some time to figure my way around. No way to run in and make a fast buck. Flying, designing my hair, it all took some poking around. Because of a glitch I didn’t realize I was walking around in my underwear. I’m classy like that.

It’s the birth of Elvis Duffy. That’s my avatar name. People are setting up myspace pages for their avatars. I’ll probably do it too. But, man, how much web presence is needed? I was hoping to manage another webpage. That’s a joke.

First thing I’ll do is learn to take a picture of Elvis Duffy in his world. I tried to make him look a bit like me. He looks pretty young, tho. There was nothing I could figure out about making him look my age. I did have control over how fat he is. Somehow I chose to make him a little slimmer than the real me. Stay tuned for an appearance by Elvis…Duffy

Well, it’s been nearly 2 months since I put my recording studio in storage and started working from a little desk at home. The big shock was how refreshing it’s been not to have to worry about the studio all time. I’ve been getting work done by hiring out an occasional studio to track a live part. It turns out that what suffers the most from a lack of a studio is the free stuff I’d so. Co-writes and such that turn into productions I’d need to churn out on my own time. I’ll get that next location cause there’s times when it’s important to be able to host a big session. But I’ll always remember this time fondly.

Electric Car November 22, 2007

This one got written just this evening. It’s been pretty hectic. But, I’d been thinking about electric vehicles since seeing the documentary Who Killed The Electric Car on Showtime. If everybody’s next car was electric, wouldn’t that dramaticaly change our dependence on oil. And if everyone had just one solar panel wouldn’t that do something? I’m probably too naive to understand how this can never be.

Electric Car

I’m going to drive my electric car into the future
I’m going to drive my electric car into the future
Into the future
Into the future

When my current car breaks down
And I’m looking for my next steed
I promise for sure I swear
I’ll switch to electricity

Watch me drive in style
I’ll be saving the world from global warming
Mile by mile by mile

I’m going to drive my electric car into the future
I’m going to drive my electric car into the future
Into the future
Into the future

It’s got a driving range of 400 miles
On a single charge
Push one little button and the top goes down
And then you’re living large
Sunshine and clear blue skies
It’s got a good sized trunk to carry my shit
Don’t want to compromise my ride

I’m going to drive my electric car into the future
I’m going to drive my electric car into the future

The sexy lines will let you know
That I’m a person on the go
I can hear my jams a whole lot better
Cause my engine noise is low
Music to my gears
My combustible engine is going to be dead
In about ten years

I’m going to drive my electric car into the future
I’m going to drive my electric car into the future
I’m going to drive my electric car into the future
I’m going to drive my electric car into the future
Into the future
Into the future
Into the future
Into the future

Looking for a new studio November 5, 2007

I looked at a couple of potential new studios today. The current one is super comfy and I’m going to miss it when the lease is upat the end of Jan. So far everything looks like a step down. Prices are sky high here in Santa Monica so for all of you able to get a place for less than $4/sq foot count yourselves lucky. 8 years at this address went so fast.

I’ve got a song for Wed. Drums are down. I’ll squeak in some more tracks tomorrow before I do some more sidelining at the piano for a new HBO show.

PonderingMoved the site from blogger. Hoping to be offering downloads – that’s the reason for the change. Following in the footsteps of Jonathan Coulton. He’s surely inspired more than just me to post weekly songs. Love to hear about others.

Already have next week’s drum track. No idea about the music or song to go on top of it. Totally fun to wing it.Want to be bright and cheery like Cheap Trick, but the track is moody like Joy Division.

This is as little as I’ve weighed lately so from here on out it’ll be real . Not just skipping a soda before weigh-in.

, the Bio is pretty cool for the 150 pages I’ve squeezed in. It’s a gas reading about these guys that are before even my time. Their rock is full of passion. They did it without the Marshall amp. A lot of the early gigs happen in my hometown, . Jackson has it’s place in rock’s history after all. Even a nearby early gig where Carl met .

The monster drummer came by and played on a trailer I’m been working on. He nailed it right away. Super guy and superior skin beater! It’s time to start tracking tomorrow’s WS.
